Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly

Sue Kaplan paints from her studio in Fish Hoek and teaches art classes both from home and at Montebello Design Centre. Her bold, expressive work draws on everyday experiences, emotions and the natural world. Her practice is intuitive and often confessional, using the physicality of paint to explore what lies beneath the surface and give form to thoughts and feelings that can be difficult to articulate. Teaching and painting are closely connected in Sue’s practice. Work developed for her students often finds its way back into her own studio, creating a reciprocal relationship between the two. Nature remains a strong and recurring presence, expressed through the energy, colour and vitality of the natural world. Sue holds an MAFA from Wits, an Honours Degree in Curating from UCT, a BAFA from UNISA and an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art from Wits. Cathy Stanley is a South African papermaker whose paper-painting practice is rooted in vulnerability, fragility and connection. Her experience as a breast cancer survivor deepened her awareness of the interdependence of life and death, both within the human body and in the natural environment. These cycles form an important part of her artistic practice. Working with handmade paper, colour, fragmentation and drawings created with her non-dominant hand, Cathy explores uncertainty, resilience and the imperfect nature of lived experience. Plants and beloved community are recurring subjects in her work, reflecting the relationships that sustain and shape us. Ross Turpin is a tattoo artist and painter based at Mothership Studios in Fish Hoek. Working across painting, drawing and tattooing, Ross has developed a bold, irreverent visual language shaped by humour, desire, popular culture and personal experience.  Ross has exhibited extensively in South Africa and internationally, with work shown in Durban, Cape Town, Berlin, Hong Kong and Sydney. Laura Cooke is a Cape Town-based painter and mixed media artist.  She holds a Bachelor of Journalism, specialising in Photojournalism, from Rhodes University. Alongside a senior career in media and communications, Laura has developed her artistic practice over several years through independent exploration, workshops and retreats, as well as several years working with Creative Space Clovelly.  Working across painting and mixed media, her practice reflects a strong visual sensibility and an evolving exploration of landscape, memory and place. She is particularly drawn to the mountains, coastline and indigenous vegetation of the Cape Peninsula, Cederberg and the Karoo, interpreting these familiar environments through expressive colour, layered surfaces and loose mark-making. Janine Venter is a figurative artist based in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. Working primarily in oil, she creates deeply personal portraits that explore the relationship between figure and ground. Through colour, composition and spatial interplay, her work evokes intimacy, vulnerability and the personal narratives held within each sitter.  Colour is central to Janine’s practice and forms part of what she describes as the emotional architecture of the work. Inspired by the people closest to her, she works intuitively, drawing on relationships, lived experience and a strong visual sensibility. Jasper Wolfeman (b. 1998) is an American artist based in Cape Town, working across painting and floral design. During their early twenties, Jasper lived in Germany, where they worked with local nonprofit organisations focused on community involvement in the arts. This experience encouraged an ongoing exploration of different cultures, creative practices and media. After developing a deep interest in flowers and oil painting, Jasper became involved in establishing a floral concept studio in Cape Town. They later found a creative home at Mothership Studios in Fish Hoek. Jasper’s work explores themes of queer softness, strength and intimacy through gentle mark-making, oil and acrylic painting, and sculptural floral arrangements. Anthea Czech is a Cape Town-based artist with a BSc in Computer Science and Psychology from the University of Cape Town. After painting part-time for many years, she has recently moved into a studio at Mothership Studios in Fish Hoek.  Her work explores landscapes, portraiture and abstraction. She draws inspiration from people, their emotions and body language, and the ways in which the psyche can be expressed unconsciously through gesture and form. Anthea is particularly interested in how light interacts with colour and form to create imagery and mood.  Her practice is exploratory, allowing each subject and composition to guide the direction of the work. Mandy Lake is a Cape Town-based artist whose painting practice captures the shifting, translucent character of the ocean. She holds a degree in History and Art History from the University of Cape Town and received formal training at the Foundation School of Art. After a successful career in design and illustration, Mandy turned her focus to oil painting. Her current work explores the complex abstraction of water surfaces. Through close observation, she translates the interplay of light, currents and iridescent movement into fluid forms. By focusing on these surface details, her paintings invite viewers into an immersive experience of the ocean’s depth, rhythm and energy. Sasha Scholtz originally studied Fine Art and then worked in the Commercial Art sector in Cape Town. She started, and supported, various small-scale creative art-related businesses before the teaching bug bit. She taught for many years in schools and to adult groups, whilst living in Eswatini, Franschhoek and Makhanda. After moving back to Cape Town, she set up a home art studio in Clovelly where she offers Art classes to adults and children: Creative Space - Clovelly. Her own art practice includes dabbling in all sorts of different media, usually using a multi-media, layering approach, mixing paint, collage and ink. Elizabeth Vels (born 1937-) is an esteemed South African artist who has held 14 solo exhibitions to date. She is one of South Africa's first papermakers as well as artist’s bookmakers, and has been since the late 1970's.  An early series of her artist’s books was bought by Jack Ginsberg, of The Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts, within the envelope of Wits Art Museum.   She has multi-media artworks in both local and international collections, including Iziko and Anglo American, and was a guest artist at the Johannesburg Art Museum.   She was with the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg for 15 years, under Linda Givon, where she had 5 solo exhibitions.   She studied at the Johannesburg College of Art and obtained a National Higher Diploma in Papermaking and Master’s Diploma in Technology. Jenny is an established photographer and visual artist with over four decades of practice exploring social landscapes, environmental portraiture, and working with diverse South African communities. Evan Oberholster was born in 1956 in South Africa. He studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria before relocating to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he worked as an artist and illustrator. In 1999, Evan presented his first solo exhibition, Total Exposure, a collection of 69 male nude paintings completed over two years of focused artistic exploration. Following this debut, he hosted two additional solo exhibitions in Cape Town and participated in several group shows. Sheree Harrison is originally from the Eastern Cape with a Fine Arts degree from Rhodes University. She is a  co-owner of Truly Fantastic, an artist's canvas manufacturing company. She paints landscapes in acrylics and oils, creates mixed media artworks and embroidered flora on canvas, all of which are inspired by the beauty of nature. Born in Durban, Lauren Shantall has lived in Cape Town since 1995. She works full-time in communications and devotes time to painting whenever she can. She lives in Fish Hoek with her husband and their son, four dogs, many goldfish and a cat. She has a small studio space at home.
