Sandile B Cele has been cultivating his unique and distinctive style since obtaining his degree in Fine Arts and specialising in ceramics at the Natal Technikon in 2000 (now the Durban University of Technology), where he studied under Hennie Stroebel.

After graduating, he shared and perfected his skills by working with Arts Aid to help young and emerging artists develop a range of interdisciplinary skills.

From 2005 to 2016, Sandile worked with internationally renowned ceramicist Clementina Van Der Walt, assisting in her studio and further developing his skills and expertise.

A Personal & Cultural Journey

Sandile B Cele celebrates and shares an unencumbered expression of his own inner journey. The influences of his early Zulu childhood combine with his contemporary urban, Afro-punk persona to create a new cultural expression he calls Zulu Goth.

In his idiosyncratic way—simultaneously playful and culturally layered—Cele embraces and celebrates parts of his world often marginalized or misunderstood by others.

Recognition & Reach

Now globally recognised, Sandile is renowned for his workshops, specially commissioned pieces for clients, and specialised ranges for retailers and the hospitality industry.

Creative Focus

Currently, Sandile creates sculptural vases, teapots, and more, inspired by traditional Zulu drinking vessels. His work blends Zulu tradition with elements of Gothic architecture.

He is also a hand-builder who crafts highly detailed pieces incorporating Bantu symbols (tribal symbols), and he draws inspiration from African body scarification to create unique surface motifs.
